Roots and Currents

Roots and Currents explores the internal conflict between the need to stay grounded and the feeling of being overwhelmed by life’s demands. The figure, rendered in earthy tones to reflect my identity as an earth sign, is both anchored and submerged—her head dissolving into tangled roots, symbolizing the past, inherited responsibilities, and the complexities of early adulthood.
The water represents duality: it is both nurturing and threatening, essential for growth but capable of drowning when it becomes too much. The shark, gliding silently in the depths, stands as a powerful metaphor for resilience. It is a creature that doesn’t stop moving, not out of choice, but out of necessity—a reflection of survival instinct and quiet strength.
This piece expresses the desire to disappear into silence, to momentarily escape the noise of a world demanding constant motion. It is about learning to navigate the tension between stillness and momentum, between who we were taught to be and who we are becoming.
